You can still buy a new sports car with a manual transmission for around $30,000, which is not something anyone expected to be true in 2026. The list is short, though, and it gets shorter every year. So here's every one that matters, with prices as of September 2026, ranked by the thing this site cares about: how much more expensive it looks than it is.
Prices include destination, and they're the base manual trim unless noted.
The ones that look like far more money
Mazda MX-5 Miata, from $30,430. The cheapest real sports car you can buy, and it looks like it costs $45,000. The proportions are perfect because there's nothing on it that doesn't need to be there, and the current car has aged better than anything else at the price. Rear-wheel drive, a roof that folds by hand in three seconds, and the best manual shifter in the business.
Toyota GR86, from $31,595, and its twin the Subaru BRZ, from $35,860. A proper rear-drive coupe with a long hood and a low roof, and from the rear three-quarter it reads as a much pricier car. The GR86 is the better-looking of the two by a small margin, and it's cheaper.
Ford Mustang GT, from $48,555. The manual is only available on the V8 GT now, which is why the price is here. But a V8 muscle car with a stick is a category of one in 2026, and the current car looks the part.
The ones that look like what they cost
Honda Civic Si, around $32,000. Brilliant to drive, and it looks like a Civic with wheels. That's fine, and some people prefer it, but nobody's going to mistake it for something exotic. The Civic Type R, around $47,000, looks like exactly what it is, which is a very fast hot hatch.
Subaru WRX, from $33,690. Rally hardware, all-wheel drive, a manual, and plastic body cladding that has divided people since the day it launched. It looks purposeful rather than pretty.
Volkswagen Jetta GLI, from $35,020, and the Hyundai Elantra N. Both are quick sedans with real manuals and both look like the family sedans they're based on, with the Elantra N's wing and red accents doing most of the talking.
What the list tells you
Every car that looks expensive on this list is rear-wheel drive with a long hood. Every car that looks like what it costs is a front-drive or all-wheel-drive sedan or hatch with a performance package. That's not a coincidence. The proportions that read as money, a long dash-to-axle and a cabin set back, are the proportions of a rear-drive platform, and no amount of wing or cladding changes what a front-drive sedan's silhouette says.
It also tells you that the cheap end of this market is now the last place you can get a manual without paying a premium for it. Porsche will sell you a stick, and says it will keep doing so, but for far more money. Below $35,000, the Miata and the GR86 are it.
If you're choosing on looks, buy the Miata or the GR86 and spend the savings on wheels, which will do more for how it photographs than any other change. Then put it up on WhipJury against something twice the price and see how often the crowd guesses wrong.
