Honda
The Type R is the track-focused halo of the Civic line. From the EK9 to the FL5, every generation has set a new standard for FWD performance.
The Honda Civic Type R is the highest-performance variant of the Civic, sold across multiple generations from 1997 to the present. The Type R designation (originally Honda Type R for race-derived models) signals stripped-down weight, aggressive chassis tuning, and the highest-output engine available for the platform. The first Civic Type R was the JDM-only EK9 (1997-2000), hand-built at Honda Suzuka factory with a B16B engine making 185 horsepower in a stripped chassis under 2,400 pounds. Subsequent Type R generations: EP3 (2001-2005, JDM and EU only) introduced the K20A engine and K-series era. FN2 (2007-2011) was Europe-only. FK2 (2015-2017) brought turbocharging with the K20C1 in a Civic hatchback that finally returned to the United States imports. FK8 (2017-2021) was the first Type R officially sold in the United States, with 306 horsepower and a 7:43 Nürburgring lap record. FL5 (2023+) raises power to 320 horsepower and sets new FWD lap records globally. The car has won numerous comparison tests against the Volkswagen Golf R, Hyundai Veloster N / Elantra N, and various other hot hatches. The combination of front-wheel drive purity, six-speed manual transmission as standard, and aggressive aerodynamics has made the Type R the modern benchmark for FWD performance. On WhipJury, Civic Type R submissions are particularly active. Both stock examples and modified builds (intake, exhaust, tune, big brake kits) reliably do well in voting. The community values the chassis dynamics and respects the engineering pedigree of the Type R lineage.
EK9 (1997-2000). First Civic Type R. JDM-only. B16B engine, hand-built at Suzuka. The original.
EP3 (2001-2005). First K-series Type R. JDM and Europe; not sold in the US. K20A engine.
FN2 (2007-2011). Europe-only. K20Z4 engine. Less aggressive chassis tuning than Japanese variants of the era.
FK2 (2015-2017). First turbocharged Type R. K20C1 engine, 306 horsepower in some markets. EU-only initially.
FK8 (2017-2021). First US-market Civic Type R. Same K20C1 engine, refined chassis, dramatic aerodynamics. Set Nürburgring FWD record at 7:43.
FL5 (2023+). Current generation. K20C1 with 320 horsepower, refined chassis dynamics, new FWD lap records. Available globally.
FK8 and FL5 are the most common Type R submissions. The EP3 and EK9 (rare in the US) are unicorns when they appear. Stock Championship White examples reliably do well in voting; mild modifications (intake, exhaust, suspension upgrades) are common.
