Ford
The original pony car. Six generations from 1964 to today. From the 1965 fastback to the modern Dark Horse and Shelby GT500.
The Ford Mustang is an American sport coupe in continuous production since 1964. The Mustang launched the pony car category and remains the only continuously-produced pony car after the discontinuation of Camaro and Challenger. Six generations span from 1964 to the present, with each generation refining the formula while maintaining the long-hood / short-deck proportions that have defined the model. The Mustang generations: First (1964-1973, with iconic Boss 302, Boss 429, and Mach 1 variants), Mustang II (1974-1978, smaller and downsized), Fox-body (1979-1993, the lightweight tuner platform), SN95 (1994-2004), S197 (2005-2014, the retro revival), S550 (2015-2023, with independent rear suspension), and current S650 (2024+). The S550 (2015-2023) was particularly significant. It introduced independent rear suspension to the Mustang for the first time, dramatically improving handling. The Shelby GT350 (with the flat-plane crank Voodoo V8 making 526 horsepower) and Shelby GT500 (with supercharged 5.2 making 760 horsepower) defined the S550 era performance. The current S650 continues with the Coyote 5.0 V8, the Dark Horse trim, and the upcoming GTD halo with active aerodynamics. The Fox-body Mustang (1979-1993) became the dominant American drag racing platform. Lightweight, simple, abundant. The 5.0 HO V8 from 1986 onward responded to bolt-ons and supported significant power. The Fox-body remains popular as a project platform. On WhipJury, Mustang submissions are highly active across all generations. Stock and modified examples in every era appear regularly. Track-prepped builds, drag racers, and OEM-plus restorations all do well in voting.
