DS Automobiles was spun off from Citroen in 2014 as a standalone premium brand within what is now the Stellantis group. The name is a direct nod to the original Citroen DS, the futuristic 1955 sedan famed for its hydropneumatic suspension and aerodynamic styling, which is still regarded as one of the most influential car designs of the twentieth century. By separating DS from the mainstream Citroen badge, the company set out to build a distinct identity around French craftsmanship, comfort, and avant-garde design rather than simply chasing the specs sheets of its rivals.

The modern DS lineup leans heavily on materials and detailing borrowed from watchmaking, fashion, and aviation, with quilted leather, pearl stitching, and dial-like instrument clusters appearing across the range. DS models are built around plug-in hybrid and fully electric E-Tense powertrains, reflecting the brand's push toward electrification alongside its focus on ride comfort and cabin refinement. Every current model, from the compact DS 3 to the flagship DS 9, is offered with some form of electrified power.

DS Automobiles has also cultivated a prestige role in French public life, supplying vehicles used in state and diplomatic settings, which reinforces the brand's positioning as the automotive expression of French luxury. Sold primarily in Europe and select global markets, DS remains a smaller-volume brand than its German rivals, but it has carved out a niche among buyers who want distinctive design and a boutique ownership experience over outright badge recognition.
