The BMW E46 is the chassis code for the fourth-generation 3 Series, produced from the late 1990s until 2006. For a large share of BMW enthusiasts it is simply the best 3 Series ever made: modern enough to live with, old enough to still feel mechanical and direct. The E46 refined the E36 rather than reinventing it, with sharper detailing, a stiffer body, and a more resolved interior. The M3 is the halo car, powered by the S54, a 3.2-liter naturally aspirated straight-six that won engine awards year after year and remains one of the most celebrated six-cylinders ever fitted to a road car. Its combination of a high redline, individual throttle bodies, and a compact rear-drive chassis is why E46 M3 values have climbed steadily. The generation is not flawless. Rear subframe reinforcement is a well-known consideration on hard-used cars, and prospective buyers check for it as a matter of routine. Peak 3 Series proportions

The S54
The E46 M3 uses the S54, a 3.2-liter naturally aspirated straight-six introduced in 2000. It took a string of international engine awards through its production life and is regarded as the last of the truly raw, high-revving naturally aspirated M3 engines before forced induction took over.
What to check
Rear subframe mounting reinforcement is the best-known E46 issue, particularly on cars that have been tracked or driven hard. A documented reinforcement is generally treated as a positive rather than a red flag.
