Pontiac Sunbird: The Sporty Subcompact
The Sunbird was Pontiac's subcompact car, offering sporty styling and affordable motoring across the 1970s through 1990s.
The Sunbird name was used by Pontiac across multiple eras from 1976, applied to subcompact cars offered in coupe, sedan, convertible, and hatchback forms. It gave Pontiac an affordable, sporty-styled small car during the fuel-conscious era and beyond.
The Sunbird offered four-cylinder engines, including turbocharged versions, and emphasized value and youthful styling. It competed in the budget small-car class with Pontiac's sporty image.
The Sunbird was eventually replaced by the Sunfire. It represents Pontiac's long-running effort to offer affordable, sporty subcompacts.
