Pontiac Fiero: The Mid-Engine Sports Car
The Fiero was Pontiac's innovative mid-engine two-seat sports car, a unique and ambitious 1980s design.
Produced from 1984 to 1988, the Fiero was a bold and unusual car for an American mainstream brand: a mid-engine, two-seat sports coupe with plastic body panels over a space-frame chassis. It was the first mass-produced mid-engine car from an American manufacturer.
Early Fieros used a modest four-cylinder, but later models gained a V6 and, in the final 1988 version, significantly improved suspension that made it genuinely fun to drive. Its wedge styling and pop-up headlights captured the era.
Despite early teething issues, the Fiero developed a devoted enthusiast following and remains a fascinating, affordable mid-engine classic and a popular base for kit-car conversions.
