Nissan
JDM 240SX hatchback variant. S13-platform sport coupe with pop-up headlights. SR20DET turbocharged engine in JDM trim.
The Nissan 180SX is the JDM hatchback variant of the S13 platform, sold from 1989 to 1998 in Japan. The 180SX shared chassis with the JDM Silvia (sedan and coupe) and the North American 240SX, but used a hatchback body style and pop-up headlights distinct from the Silvia variant. The 180SX is closely related to all three; the engine and trim differ by market and trim level. JDM 180SX models typically used the SR20DET turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making 200-220 horsepower depending on year and trim. The Type X trim (introduced for 1996) was the most aggressive 180SX variant with revised aerodynamics and updated styling. The chassis is the same S13 platform that became foundational for grassroots drift culture worldwide. The 180SX has been a popular JDM import under the 25-year rule. The hatchback body style provides slightly different aesthetics from the Silvia coupe; some enthusiasts prefer the 180SX for the unique body. Modified 180SX builds (with engine upgrades, body kit modifications) are common. The 180SX Type X is the most desirable variant. Limited production with revised aero (front bumper, rear bumper, wider fenders), and other styling improvements. The Type X has appreciated significantly as the cars become recognized future classics. On WhipJury, 180SX submissions are common, particularly Type X variants and modified examples. The community recognizes the 180SX as part of the broader S-platform drift culture.
Same S13 platform, different markets and body styles. 180SX is the JDM hatchback. Silvia is the JDM coupe/sedan. 240SX is the North American name (with KA24DE engine instead of SR20DET). All three share chassis fundamentals; the differences are body, engine, and trim.
The Type X (1996-1998) is the most aggressive 180SX variant. Revised aerodynamics including front bumper and rear bumper, wider fenders, updated styling. Limited production. The Type X has become particularly desirable in the JDM import market.
180SX submissions appear regularly, particularly Type X variants. Modified builds (engine swaps, drift-prep modifications, suspension upgrades) are common. The community recognizes the 180SX alongside the Silvia and 240SX as foundation drift platforms.
