Nissan
Nissan's 1990s sport coupe (1990-1996). The Z32 generation with optional VG30DETT twin-turbo V6 making 300 horsepower factory rating.
The Nissan 300ZX (chassis code Z32) is the third-generation Z car produced from 1990 to 1996 (also continued in some markets through 2000). The Z32 represented a major leap from the previous 300ZX (Z31, 1984-1989) with significantly modernized styling, more aggressive chassis tuning, and the addition of a twin-turbocharged variant. The Z32 came in several variants. Standard 300ZX (with naturally aspirated VG30DE, 222 horsepower), 300ZX Turbo (with twin-turbocharged VG30DETT, 300 horsepower factory rating), 300ZX 2+2 (longer wheelbase with rear seats), and various other trim differences. The Twin Turbo variant was the performance-focused model and competed directly with contemporary supercars like the Toyota Supra Turbo, Mazda RX-7, and Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4. The Z32 was widely praised by reviewers in the 1990s. Reviews compared the chassis dynamics favorably to European competitors. The Twin Turbo specifically was considered one of the best Japanese performance cars of the era. Production ended in 1996 in North America (1999-2000 in Japan); the Z car nameplate then went on hiatus until the 350Z launched in 2003. The Z32 has appreciated significantly as the cars become recognized future classics. Naturally aspirated 300ZX cars are more affordable; Twin Turbo examples command significant premiums. Modified Z32 builds (with engine upgrades, suspension modifications) are popular. On WhipJury, 300ZX submissions are common, particularly Twin Turbo examples. Stock low-mile cars do well in voting. Modified builds with VG30DETT engine work and suspension upgrades appear regularly.
The 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 used in the 300ZX Turbo. 300 horsepower factory rating (likely more in actual). Iron block, twin Garrett T22 turbochargers, intercoolers. The engine is reliable when maintained and has decent power potential through bolt-ons and tunes. Maintenance is more complex than competitor V6 engines due to the cramped engine bay.
Naturally aspirated 300ZX, 300ZX Turbo, 300ZX 2+2 (longer wheelbase), 300ZX 2+2 Turbo. Various trim and equipment levels through the production run. The Twin Turbo (300 horsepower) is the most desirable variant.
Twin Turbo cars reliably do well. Naturally aspirated examples appear regularly and are often modified for additional power. Modified builds with suspension upgrades and engine work are common. The community recognizes the Z32 as one of the seminal 1990s Japanese sport coupes.
