Li Auto: China's Leading Extended-Range Electric SUV Brand
EVLi Auto, also known as Lixiang, is a Chinese automaker renowned for pioneering extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) that pair a small gasoline engine with an electric drivetrain, eliminating range anxiety while delivering EV-style performance.
Founded in 2015 and publicly listed on Nasdaq and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, Li Auto has grown into one of China's top-selling new-energy vehicle brands. The company built its reputation on the EREV powertrain concept, in which a compact gasoline engine acts solely as an onboard generator to recharge the battery pack, never directly driving the wheels. This approach allows drivers to travel thousands of kilometers on a single tank plus charge cycle without the range anxiety associated with pure battery-electric vehicles.
Li Auto's core lineup consists of the L-series SUVs -- the L6, L7, L8, and L9 -- all of which use the EREV architecture and are positioned across a wide price band from mainstream to luxury. The vehicles are known for their large interior screens, advanced driver-assistance systems, and family-oriented cabin layouts. The flagship L9 competes directly with premium six-seat SUVs from traditional luxury brands. In 2024 Li Auto expanded beyond EREVs with the Mega, a pure battery-electric MPV featuring 800-volt ultra-fast charging technology.
The company has invested heavily in its own charging network, over-the-air software updates, and in-house smart-cabin AI systems branded as Li Xiang Tong Xue (roughly "Li Auto Classmate"). Li Auto has repeatedly set monthly delivery records among Chinese new-energy brands and is widely watched as a bellwether for the broader premiumization of Chinese EVs in domestic and potential export markets.
