What is Range Anxiety?
Range anxiety is the worry that an electric vehicle will run out of charge before reaching a destination or an available charger.
Range anxiety describes the concern, common among electric vehicle drivers and especially prospective buyers, that a vehicle's remaining battery charge will run out before reaching a destination or a place to recharge. The term became widely used as EVs entered the mainstream market, capturing a specific worry that doesn't have a direct equivalent for gasoline vehicles, given the density and speed of the existing gas station refueling network.
Several factors feed range anxiety beyond a vehicle's rated range figure, including uncertainty about real-world range under different driving conditions, temperature effects on battery performance, the availability and reliability of charging infrastructure along a given route, and charging speed compared to the near-instant refueling of a gas vehicle. Cold weather in particular can meaningfully reduce usable EV range, which can catch drivers off guard if they plan trips around a warm-weather range estimate.
Range anxiety has eased over time as EV battery capacity and efficiency have improved, average rated ranges have increased across the market, and charging networks, particularly DC fast charging corridors along major highways, have expanded. In-car navigation systems that account for charging stops and real-time battery status have also helped reduce uncertainty, though range anxiety remains a commonly cited factor in surveys of EV purchase hesitancy, particularly among drivers without reliable home charging access.
