BYD: World's Largest EV and PHEV Maker
EVBYD (Build Your Dreams) is a Chinese automaker and the world's largest producer of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, renowned for its proprietary Blade lithium-iron-phosphate battery and the advanced e-Platform 3.0 architecture.
Founded in 1995 as a battery company in Shenzhen, China, BYD pivoted into electric vehicles in the mid-2000s and has since grown into the global leader in new energy vehicle sales. The company's vertically integrated approach -- controlling everything from raw battery materials to finished vehicles -- gives it a significant cost advantage over rivals and underpins the reliability of its powertrain systems.
BYD's signature Blade battery, introduced in 2020 on the Han sedan, uses lithium-iron-phosphate chemistry arranged in a cell-to-pack configuration that eliminates traditional module housings. The result is a battery that passes the nail-penetration test without fire, enabling higher energy density in a slimmer pack while improving thermal safety. The Blade battery is now deployed across virtually every BYD model sold globally.
The e-Platform 3.0, unveiled in 2021, underpins BYD's latest generation of electric vehicles and integrates the motor, motor controller, and gearbox into a single compact 8-in-1 unit alongside an 8-in-1 high-voltage system. This architecture enables 800-volt-class fast charging compatibility, improved heat pump efficiency, and a low center of gravity that benefits handling. BYD exports vehicles to Europe, Australia, Southeast Asia, and other major markets, positioning itself as a genuine global contender against established Western and Japanese brands.
