Buick Regal: The Versatile Mid-Size Buick
The Regal spanned comfortable personal luxury coupes, the turbocharged Grand National, and modern sport sedans and wagons.
The Regal name has covered many forms since 1973. Early Regals were mid-size personal luxury coupes, and the Regal platform famously spawned the turbocharged Grand National and GNX performance legends of the 1980s.
Later Regals became front-wheel-drive sedans, and the modern Regal, based on the Opel Insignia, returned as a more European-flavored sport sedan, including a GS performance version, a TourX wagon, and a Sportback hatchback.
The Regal reflects Buick's evolution from traditional American comfort to more contemporary, globally influenced designs, with its 1980s turbo versions remaining especially iconic.
