The best color for the Mazda MX-5 Miata depends on which Miata you mean. For a new ND, it's Soul Red Crystal. For an original NA, it's Mariner Blue, and that one has money behind it: Mariner Blue cars sell for the biggest premium of any Miata color at auction, according to Hagerty.
Here's every current color, the classic ones worth knowing, and why the winners win.
The six colors Mazda sells for 2026
Mazda offers the 2026 Miata in six colors: Soul Red Crystal Metallic, Machine Gray Metallic, Aero Gray, Snowflake White Pearl Mica, Deep Crystal Blue Mica, and Jet Black Mica. Four of them are premium paints at $595 each. Those are Soul Red, Machine Gray, Aero Gray, and Snowflake White.
Soul Red Crystal is the pick. The ND's body is short and curvy, with tall front fenders and a sharp crease running back along the doors. A deep metallic red shows every one of those curves, with bright highlights on the top of the fenders and dark red in the dips.

The grays are the sensible choice. Machine Gray arrived with the RF hardtop for 2017, and Aero Gray joined the list for 2024. Mazda described Aero Gray as having "a cool tone that contrasts nicely against MX-5 Miata's available dark trim and wheels," and it does look sharp with black wheels. It also hides the same curves Soul Red shows off.

Deep Crystal Blue is the dark horse. In shade it reads almost black, and in sun it turns into a rich navy. It's also one of the two colors that aren't on Mazda's $595 premium list, along with Jet Black.

One recent color is already gone. Zircon Sand, a pale beige metallic, was new for 2023 on Club trims and up, and it isn't on the 2026 list. It's worth hunting down on a used ND if you want something that doesn't look like every other Miata in the parking lot.

Another one is on the way. Mazda announced a new color called Zinc Green on May 31, 2026, and said the MX-5 and MX-5 RF would be the first models to get it. For the US, Mazda said availability would be announced later in the year.
The best color for an older Miata
The first Miatas came in three colors: Classic Red, Crystal White, and Mariner Blue. Silver Stone Metallic followed later in the 1990 model year, and 1992 added Brilliant Black and Sunburst Yellow.
Mariner Blue is the one. It's a bright, pure blue that suits the NA's simple, rounded shape and its pop-up headlights. Hagerty found that Mariner Blue cars carry the biggest premium of any color in nearly 800 NA and NB auction sales, even though more than 13,000 were built. "To be fair to Mariner Blue, though, it looks gorgeous on a Miata," wrote Hagerty's Andrew Newton.

Classic Red is the classic for a reason, and it's everywhere. Mazda built more than 84,000 NAs in Classic Red, far more than any other color, and those cars sell at a mild discount. Crystal White is common too, with more than 32,000 built, and sits in the middle for value.

The yellows show that rare doesn't always mean valuable. Just 1,519 Miatas were painted Sunburst Yellow, a 1992-only color, and they still sell at a discount. Blazing Yellow, a 2002-only NB color with about 1,000 built, carries one of the highest premiums. Vivid Yellow from the same year had only 239 cars, and it still earns less of a premium than Blazing Yellow. Evolution Orange, with just 646 built, sells at the biggest discount in Hagerty's data.

Laguna Blue, which replaced Mariner Blue for 1994, is much rarer at about 2,200 cars, but its premium is far smaller. Hagerty's own advice at the end of all that math was simple: buy what you love, because condition matters more than paint.
Mazda has also used anniversary models to try new colors. The 30th Anniversary car got Racing Orange, limited to 3,000 cars worldwide, and the 35th Anniversary Edition got Artisan Red Metallic, limited to 300 cars in the US.
