Volkswagen Thing: The Quirky Utility Vehicle
The Thing was a boxy, no-frills utility vehicle based on Beetle mechanicals, prized today for its rugged simplicity and oddball charm.
Known as the Type 181, the Thing was sold in the US in the early-to-mid 1970s as a civilian version of a military-style utility vehicle. With its flat, removable panels, fold-down windshield, and basic open body, it offered Jeep-like utility with Beetle simplicity and air-cooled mechanicals.
Spartan and unconventional, the Thing was never a big seller, but its quirky, rugged character and go-anywhere attitude earned it a cult following. Its removable doors and top added to its fun, utilitarian appeal.
Today the Thing is a beloved oddball collectible, sought after for its distinctive looks and the same air-cooled simplicity that made the Beetle famous.
