Volkswagen
The original hot hatch (since 1976). Mk7 (2014-2020) is widely considered the best modern hot hatch. Eight generations of refinement.
The Volkswagen Golf GTI is the original hot hatch, in production since 1976. The Golf GTI invented the hot hatch category and defined the formula that all subsequent hot hatches have refined. Eight generations of GTI have iterated on the same idea: small, balanced, front-drive hatchback with a fuel-injected four-cylinder, manual or DSG transmission, and tighter sport-tuned suspension. The Mk1 GTI (1976-1983) was the original. Mk5 GTI (2005-2009) was the rebirth after a flat Mk3/Mk4 era. Mk7 GTI (2014-2020) is widely considered the best modern hot hatch. The current Mk8 GTI (2022+) is more refined but has received mixed reviews compared to Mk7. The Golf GTI Clubsport variant adds focused performance to the standard GTI. On WhipJury, GTI submissions are highly active, particularly Mk5 through Mk8 generations. Modified GTIs with various tunes, suspension, and exterior modifications are common. The GTI is a defining hot hatch in modern enthusiast culture.
