BYD Shark 6: The Plug-In Hybrid Pickup That Debuted in Mexico
The BYD Shark 6 is a plug-in hybrid mid-size pickup and BYD's first light utility vehicle. It was also the first BYD to make its global debut outside China, in Mexico in May 2024.
The Shark rides on a body-on-frame chassis, the traditional pickup construction. Its rear suspension is less typical: rivals in the mid-size class commonly use leaf springs, and the Shark uses coil springs with an independent double-wishbone setup. Ground clearance is 230 mm (9.1 inches). BYD builds it at its Zhengzhou factory in Henan province.
The drivetrain, which BYD calls Dual Mode Off-Road, pairs a 1.5-liter turbocharged gas engine (181 hp) with two electric motors, one on each axle, rated at 228 hp in front and 201 hp in back. Together they make 430 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. BYD says it is the first range-extender hybrid layout with the engine mounted lengthwise. A 29.58 kWh LFP battery gives about 85 km (53 miles) of electric driving on the WLTP cycle and 670 km (416 miles) combined, and it takes DC charging at up to 55 kW. BYD claims 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds and a braked towing rating of 2,500 kg (5,510 pounds).
After Mexico, the truck reached Brazil in October 2024, then Australia and New Zealand as the Shark 6, followed by the Philippines, South Africa, Pakistan, and other markets. It was the most powerful pickup on sale in South Africa when it arrived there in April 2025. In April 2026 Australia got a Performance version with a 2.0-liter turbo engine, 469 horsepower, 516 lb-ft, and a 3,500 kg (7,716 pound) tow rating, plus a cab-chassis version called the Dynamic. That same month, BYD's 100,000th sale in Australia was a Shark 6. The truck comes to China itself in 2026 under BYD's Fangchengbao brand.
