BYD Seagull: Ultra-Affordable City Electric Car
The BYD Seagull is a tiny, ultra-affordable city EV that has become one of BYD's highest-volume models, sold in some export markets as the Dolphin Mini.
The BYD Seagull occupies the entry point of BYD's lineup and is among the most affordable new electric vehicles available anywhere in the world. Launched in China in 2023, it rapidly became a massive sales success by putting EV ownership within reach of a far broader segment of buyers than most battery-electric cars can address. Its low starting price is enabled by BYD's vertically integrated supply chain and the cost efficiency of its LFP Blade battery chemistry.
Despite its budget positioning, the Seagull uses core BYD technology including the Blade battery, which brings the thermal safety and long cycle-life advantages of lithium-iron-phosphate to a vehicle class that previously relied on older cell formats. The Seagull's compact dimensions and tight turning radius suit dense urban environments, and its operating costs are minimal given the simplicity of the powertrain and the low cost of electricity relative to gasoline.
In export markets, the Seagull is sometimes sold as the Dolphin Mini to align with BYD's established international Dolphin nameplate. Its arrival in Latin America and early access in some Southeast Asian markets has generated significant attention from governments and consumers looking for an accessible EV transition path. Analysts have noted that the Seagull represents the kind of price point that could accelerate mass EV adoption in developing economies far more rapidly than premium models alone.
