Toyota
The A90 Supra (2019+). BMW Z4 platform underpinnings, BMW B58 inline-six, and 17 years after the MK4 ended.
The Toyota Supra MK5 (chassis code A90) returned the Supra nameplate to production in 2019, ending a 17-year hiatus since the MK4 ended in 2002. The A90 Supra is a collaborative project with BMW: the platform, engine, transmission, and most major components are shared with the BMW Z4 (G29). Toyota provides the chassis tuning, exterior design, interior styling, and final manufacturing in Austria. The A90 Supra uses BMW B58 turbocharged inline-six engine. Initial production cars made 335 horsepower; subsequent calibrations bumped this to 382 horsepower in current models. Eight-speed automatic transmission is standard; six-speed manual transmission was added for the 2023 model year (a notable enthusiast-friendly addition). Rear-wheel drive only; AWD has not been offered. The A90 has been polarizing among Supra enthusiasts. Critics argue the BMW underpinnings dilute the Toyota character of the original Supra lineage. Supporters argue the chassis dynamics, engine character, and overall package make the A90 a worthy modern continuation. Reviews consistently praise the chassis tuning, the engine refinement, and the manual transmission availability. The A90 has become a popular tuner platform. The B58 engine responds well to bolt-ons and tunes; ECU tunes can boost output significantly (450-500 horsepower easily achievable). Track-focused builds with wing kits, suspension upgrades, and tire upgrades are common. The platform has built a meaningful tuning community in the years since launch. On WhipJury, A90 Supra submissions are growing as the cars age into the used market. Both stock and modified builds appear regularly. The community engagement with the A90 has grown over time, particularly after the manual transmission availability in 2023.
The BMW B58 is a turbocharged inline-six 3.0-liter engine. Used in the BMW M340i, BMW Z4 M40i, and Toyota A90 Supra. Direct injection, twin-scroll turbocharger, and modern emissions equipment. Reliable when maintained; responds well to ECU tunes for additional 50-150 horsepower. The engine in current Supra applications makes 382 horsepower.
The A90 Supra was launched as automatic-only (eight-speed BMW automatic). Toyota added six-speed manual transmission availability for the 2023 model year, addressing a major enthusiast complaint. The manual transmission is widely praised; reviews consistently note that the manual is well-engineered and adds significant driving engagement to the Supra experience.
Stock A90 examples reliably do well. Modified builds (intake, exhaust, tune, suspension) are common. The community has grown significantly since launch, with the manual transmission availability accelerating community engagement. Drag racing, track day, and OEM-plus builds all find strong support.
