Mitsubishi
Mitsubishi GTO. The Japanese market name for the 3000GT. Twin-turbo V6, AWD, all-wheel steering. JDM-only specifications.
The Mitsubishi GTO is the Japanese market name for the 3000GT. The car is the same vehicle sold in different markets under different names: GTO in Japan, 3000GT in North America, GTO in some other markets. The mechanicals, design, and platform are identical; specifications differ slightly between markets due to regulatory requirements and market-specific equipment. The GTO Twin Turbo (the JDM equivalent of the 3000GT VR4) used the 6G72 V6 with twin Garrett T22 turbochargers making 280 horsepower factory rating in JDM markets (the Japanese gentleman's agreement number). AWD with all-wheel steering, active aerodynamics, and electronically controlled suspension. The GTO Type R-S was the most aggressive JDM variant. JDM GTO imports have been increasingly common as the cars age into the 25-year rule. The JDM specification cars have minor differences from US-spec 3000GT (interior trim, instrumentation, stereo equipment), but the core engineering is identical. Some enthusiasts prefer JDM GTO over USDM 3000GT for the JDM cultural connection and unique trim. The GTO ended production in 2001. Modified GTO builds (with twin-turbo upgrades, suspension modifications, body kit modifications) appear regularly. The platform is well-supported by specialty 3000GT/GTO mechanics globally. On WhipJury, GTO submissions appear occasionally and reliably do well in voting. Modified examples with engine and chassis upgrades are common.
Same car, different markets. GTO is JDM name; 3000GT is North American market name. Mechanicals, design, and platform are identical. Specification differences: interior trim levels, instrumentation, stereo equipment, regulatory equipment. Choice between USDM 3000GT and JDM GTO often comes down to availability and personal preference.
GTO submissions appear occasionally and reliably do well. Modified examples with twin-turbo upgrades and chassis modifications are common. The community recognizes both GTO and 3000GT as the same fundamental car with different market badges.
