Mitsubishi Outlander: The Brand's Flagship Family Crossover
The Outlander is Mitsubishi's best-known crossover, a three-row compact SUV that has grown into the brand's flagship, including a popular plug-in hybrid variant.
Introduced in the early 2000s, the Outlander has served as Mitsubishi's mainstream family SUV across three generations. It offered available third-row seating that set it apart from many compact crossover rivals, packaging seven seats into a relatively tidy footprint.
A defining chapter came with the Outlander PHEV, a plug-in hybrid that became one of the best-selling plug-in hybrids in Europe and other markets. Its combination of electric-only commuting range, all-wheel drive, and SUV practicality proved a winning formula well ahead of many competitors offering similar technology.
The current generation, launched in 2021, was developed in partnership with the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance and shares its platform with the Nissan Rogue. It marked a significant step up in quality, design, and technology, restoring the Outlander as a credible flagship and the centerpiece of Mitsubishi's lineup.
