Ford Focus: The Global Compact Benchmark
The Focus was Ford's hugely successful compact car, renowned for class-leading handling and available in hatchback, sedan, and wagon forms.
Launched in 1998, the Focus replaced the Escort and quickly set new standards for compact-car driving dynamics, earning widespread praise and numerous awards. Its sophisticated suspension gave it handling that often embarrassed pricier rivals.
Over multiple generations the Focus offered a wide range of body styles and engines, from frugal commuters to the hot Focus ST and the rally-bred Focus RS. It became one of the best-selling cars in the world.
Ford ended Focus sales in North America in 2018 and globally in the early 2020s as it pivoted to SUVs, but the Focus remains celebrated as a benchmark compact.
