Mid-size sport sedan and Acura best-seller. The Type-S and SH-AWD versions are the enthusiast picks.

The Acura TL was the brand mid-size sport sedan and, for years, its best-selling model. The third-generation TL (2004-2008) with the J32 V6 and an available 6-speed manual is the enthusiast favorite, especially in TL Type-S form with around 286 horsepower. Later generations added SH-AWD (Super Handling All-Wheel Drive) for strong all-weather traction. On WhipJury, the TL appears as an affordable, well-built sport sedan, with manual Type-S cars the most sought after.

TL specifications

3.2 or 3.5 to 3.7 liter J-series V6 depending on generation. Type-S up to around 286 to 305 horsepower. Front-wheel drive or SH-AWD. Automatic or available 6-speed manual.

Frequently asked questions about Acura TL

Which TL is the best for enthusiasts?
The third-generation TL Type-S (2007-2008) with the 6-speed manual is the enthusiast favorite, combining around 286 horsepower with a proper manual gearbox and a limited-slip differential.
What is SH-AWD?
Super Handling All-Wheel Drive, Acura torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system that can send power to the outside rear wheel in corners to sharpen handling. It appeared on later TL models.
Does the TL come with a manual?
Yes, on certain trims, most notably the Type-S and the later SH-AWD 6MT. Manual TLs are less common and more desirable.
Is the TL reliable?
Generally yes. The J-series V6 is durable, though some automatic-equipped Honda V6s of the era had transmission concerns. Manual cars avoid that issue.
What replaced the TL?
The TLX, which consolidated the TL and TSX into a single mid-size sedan line.

Badge engineering is selling one car under another brand with new badges and a reworked face. The oddest example is the Saab 9-2X, a Subaru WRX with a Saab nose that nobody wanted. Here's why carmakers keep doing it, and what it reveals about how much a grille is actually worth.

A K-swap means dropping a Honda K-series four-cylinder into a car that didn't come with one, and it's the most popular engine swap in the world. Introduced in 2001, the K20 and K24 make easy power, run i-VTEC, and are cheap and everywhere. Here's why K-swap the world became a plan.

Why Cars Looked Better When They Were Dangerous
Why Cars Looked Better When They Were Dangerous

The most beautiful production cars ever built would kill you at a rate modern safety regulators would find unconscionable. The 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB had no crumple zones, no airbags, a steering column that would impale the driver in a frontal impact, and drum brakes that required planning your stops several seconds in advance. It is also one of the most visually perfect objects ever produced by human hands. The connection between these two facts is not coincidental...
