What is Body Roll?
Body roll is the lean of a car's body toward the outside of a corner, caused by weight transfer compressing the outside suspension and extending the inside suspension as the car turns.
Body roll is the sideways tilt a car's body makes toward the outside of a turn, visible as the car leaning away from the direction it is steering. It happens because a car's mass sits above its suspension and roll center, so when cornering forces act on the tires at ground level, the body above pivots around that roll axis, compressing the outside springs and dampers while the inside springs extend. The stiffer the springs and anti-roll bars, and the lower the center of gravity, the less the body leans for a given cornering force.
The underlying mechanism is lateral weight transfer. As a car corners, centrifugal force pushes its mass toward the outside wheels, loading them more heavily and unloading the inside wheels. Softer suspension allows more body movement to absorb that transfer, which produces more visible roll, while stiffer suspension resists the movement and keeps the body flatter through the same corner, though it also transmits more of the transfer directly into tire loading rather than body lean.
Body roll affects both handling feel and outright grip. A car with excessive roll can feel vague and unsettling because the tires' contact patches and camber angles change as the body leans, and rapid weight transfer during quick direction changes can upset the car's balance. Sway bars, stiffer springs, coilovers, and a lower center of gravity are the primary tools used to control body roll, and most performance-oriented suspension setups aim to keep roll modest without making the ride harsh.
