XPeng Mona M03: The Budget EV DiDi Built and XPeng Bought
The XPeng Mona M03 is a compact electric car that launched XPeng's lower-priced Mona line in 2024. It started life at the ride-hailing company DiDi, which sold the project to XPeng before it reached production.
DiDi's electric vehicle unit, called Da Vinci, began the car in 2021 under the codename Mona, planning it as the first model of DiDi's own budget EV brand. Development was nearly finished by late 2022, and camouflaged prototypes were spotted on the road in March 2023. Around then most of the team was laid off, and in August 2023 DiDi sold its EV business and the Mona project to XPeng. XPeng kept the name and says it now stands for "Made Of New AI." CEO He Xiaopeng has said the M03 name is a tribute to the Tesla Model 3.
XPeng introduced the car in July 2024, and deliveries began on August 30. It had delivered 30,000 by mid-November, and production passed 200,000 in November 2025. Buyers skew young: at the May 2025 launch of the Max trim, XPeng said 90 percent of M03 customers were under 35.
The engineering centered on drag. XPeng ran the car through 10 wind tunnel sessions of more than 100 hours each and claims a drag coefficient of 0.194, which it says is the lowest of any mass-produced electric hatchback, worth an extra 60 km (37 miles) of range. A single front motor drives the car, powered by an LFP battery of 51.8 kWh or 62.2 kWh. The trims are named for their CLTC range in kilometers: 515, 620, and 580 Max. The cabin has one 15.6-inch floating screen and no physical buttons apart from two scroll wheels on the steering wheel, and a driver display behind the wheel is an optional plug-in accessory. Max versions add supervised city driving assistance on two Nvidia Orin X chips, without lidar.
