XPeng P5: Affordable Electric Sedan with Lidar
The XPeng P5 is a compact electric family sedan that gained attention as one of the first mass-market EVs to offer lidar-assisted driver assistance as a standard feature on higher trims.
Introduced in 2021, the XPeng P5 occupies the entry-level position in the brand's sedan lineup, targeting buyers who want practical electric transport with advanced driver assistance at a price below the flagship P7. It shares XPeng's emphasis on in-house software development, with Xpilot driver assistance available in versions that include dual front-mounted lidar units. This made the P5 notable as an early example of lidar being offered in a relatively affordable production vehicle rather than reserved for premium trims.
The P5 is built on a 400-volt architecture and offers battery options yielding CLTC-rated ranges from around 460 to 600 km depending on variant. It is available in rear-wheel-drive configuration only and delivers adequate rather than sporty acceleration, prioritizing efficiency and comfort for urban and suburban family use. The interior is practical with a roomy cabin for the segment and a large central touchscreen running XPeng's connected vehicle software.
As a somewhat older design in XPeng's lineup, the P5 does not benefit from the 800-volt charging platform introduced with the G9 and G6, and its Xpilot implementation predates the XNGP branding used on newer models. Nevertheless, it remains a solid affordable option for buyers entering the XPeng ecosystem and wanting a connected family sedan with genuine driver assistance hardware rather than a camera-only system.
