What is Lidar?

Lidar is a laser-based sensing technology that measures distance by timing reflected light pulses, used in autonomous driving and advanced driver assistance systems.

Lidar, short for light detection and ranging, is a sensing technology that measures distance by emitting laser pulses and timing how long it takes for the light to reflect off objects and return to the sensor. By firing many pulses in different directions, a lidar unit can build a detailed three-dimensional point cloud representing the shapes and positions of objects around the vehicle.

In the context of vehicles, lidar is used primarily for autonomous driving development and, in some cases, advanced driver assistance systems, where its precise distance measurements help a vehicle detect and classify obstacles, pedestrians, and other vehicles. Lidar's strength lies in providing highly accurate depth information directly, compared to cameras, which infer depth indirectly, or radar, which offers less precise spatial resolution but works well in poor weather.

Automakers and autonomous vehicle developers differ in how heavily they rely on lidar, with some treating it as a core sensor alongside cameras and radar, while others have pursued camera-only or camera-plus-radar approaches, arguing that vision-based systems can eventually match lidar's capabilities at lower cost.
