MINI Cooper: The Original Go-Kart Hatch
The MINI Cooper is the core model of the modern MINI lineup, a 3-door or 5-door hatchback renowned for razor-sharp handling and unmistakable retro styling.
When BMW revived the MINI brand in 2001, the Cooper hatchback was the model that launched it all. Named after the original Cooper performance variants of the 1960s, the modern Cooper combined heritage styling cues such as round headlights and a central speedometer with a thoroughly contemporary chassis. The 3-door body was joined by a more practical 5-door variant in 2014, giving buyers extra rear door access without sacrificing the hatch's compact footprint.
Engine options across the generations have ranged from modest 1.2-litre three-cylinder units in base trim to the punchier 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder in Cooper S specification, which produces around 178 horsepower in current form. The Cooper S adds a sport-tuned suspension, larger brakes, and a subtle bonnet scoop, while remaining recognisably part of the same family. A 7-speed dual-clutch or 8-speed automatic transmission is offered alongside a 6-speed manual in select markets.
The fourth generation Cooper, revealed in 2023, adopts a cleaner exterior design and a dramatically simplified interior centred on a large circular OLED display, a deliberate nod to the classic round speedometer. Petrol Cooper and Cooper S variants continue alongside the battery-electric Cooper SE, and the go-kart handling character that defines the nameplate remains central to what the Cooper delivers in every configuration.
