MINI Convertible: Open-Air Go-Kart Thrills
The MINI Convertible is the soft-top open-air version of the Cooper hatch, combining the brand's iconic go-kart handling with a folding fabric roof for alfresco driving.
MINI has offered a convertible variant since the very start of the modern era, with the first-generation soft-top appearing in 2004. Based on the 3-door Cooper bodyshell, the Convertible adds a power-folding fabric roof that can open or close in around 18 seconds at speeds up to 30 km/h. A reinforced bodyshell compensates for the loss of the fixed roof structure, adding weight but maintaining the rigid feel needed for the sharp steering responses MINI is known for.
The current third-generation Convertible, which arrived in 2016 alongside the third-generation Cooper hatch, is available in Cooper and Cooper S petrol trims as well as a John Cooper Works version with 231 horsepower. The fabric roof folds neatly behind the rear seats, leaving a usable 160-litre boot with the roof down that expands to 215 litres with it raised. A folding windscreen deflector reduces turbulence at speed, and the interior matches the quality and personalisation options of the hatch.
The Convertible appeals most strongly in sunbelt markets and as a second or leisure car rather than a primary family vehicle given its reduced practicality. MINI has not yet confirmed whether the fourth-generation platform will spawn a new Convertible, and the current model continues to sell on the basis of its distinctive character and the simple pleasure of open-air driving in a genuinely fun-to-drive small car.
