Mercedes-Benz SLK: The Folding-Hardtop Roadster Pioneer
The SLK was Mercedes-Benz's compact roadster that popularized the retractable folding hardtop, blending coupe security with open-air fun.
Launched in 1996, the SLK helped popularize the power-folding metal hardtop in an affordable roadster, offering the refinement and security of a coupe with the open-air freedom of a convertible at the push of a button. It became a stylish, popular two-seater.
Across three generations the SLK offered a range of engines from four-cylinders to the supercharged Kompressor units and AMG V8 and V6 versions. Later models introduced Magic Sky Control, an electronically tinting glass roof.
The SLK was eventually renamed the SLC. As the car that brought the folding hardtop roadster to the mainstream, the SLK holds an important place in Mercedes' lineup history.
