Mercedes-Benz 190E: The Compact That Started a Dynasty
The 190E was Mercedes-Benz's first compact executive sedan, the baby Benz that launched the lineage leading to the C-Class.
Produced from 1982 to 1993, the 190E (the W201) was Mercedes-Benz's first foray into the compact executive class, earning the nickname baby Benz. Engineered to typical Mercedes standards of quality and durability, it brought the brand to a younger, broader audience.
The 190E is especially famous for the high-performance 190E 2.3-16 and 2.5-16 Cosworth versions, developed with Cosworth for motorsport homologation. These became touring car legends and are now highly prized by collectors.
The 190E laid the foundation for the C-Class that succeeded it, and its rugged build means many survive today. The Cosworth versions in particular are revered as 1980s performance icons.
