Lotus Europa: The Mid-Engine Pioneer
The Europa was an early mid-engine Lotus, a lightweight, low-slung sports car that brought race-car layout to the road.
Produced from 1966 to 1975, the original Europa was a pioneering mid-engine sports car that brought the racing-derived layout to an affordable road car. Its low, distinctive styling and backbone chassis delivered nimble handling and excellent balance.
Lightweight and focused, the Europa used modest four-cylinder engines but its low weight made it engaging and quick through corners. A later Europa name was revived in the 2000s for a more grand-touring-oriented model based on the Elise platform.
The classic Europa is a significant Lotus, an early mid-engine road car that embodied the brand's lightweight, handling-focused philosophy.
