Lotus
Lotus's lightweight sports car (1996-2021). Under 2,000 pounds. Toyota or Rover engines. The lightweight sports car benchmark.
The Lotus Elise is a lightweight sports car produced from 1996 to 2021. The Elise was Lotus interpretation of Colin Chapman lightweight engineering philosophy: aluminum extruded chassis, fiberglass bodywork, no power steering or ABS in early variants, and curb weight under 2,000 pounds. Multiple generations refined the formula. Three Elise generations: S1 (1996-2001), S2 (2001-2010), and S3 (2011-2021). The S1 Elise used Rover K-series engine (118-192 horsepower); S2 and S3 Eliseuses used Toyota 2ZZ-GE (192 horsepower in supercharged variants). The Elise R (S2) and Elise Cup variants are the focused performance trims. Modern Elise production ended in 2021 as Lotus transitioned to the Emira and electric models (Eletre, Emeya). The Elise platform continues through aftermarket support and the Caterham Seven (which uses similar lightweight philosophy). On WhipJury, Elise submissions are common across all three generations.
