The BMW Z4 is a roadster produced from 2002+. The Z4 succeeded the Z3 as BMW affordable roadster. Multiple generations across two decades. The current G29 Z4 (2019+) shares platform with the Toyota Supra (Toyota partnership). Available with 2.0L turbocharged inline-four (Z4 sDrive20i and 30i) or 3.0L turbocharged inline-six (Z4 M40i, M40i-spec sister Toyota Supra). The Z4 M Coupe (2006-2008) was the focused performance variant of the previous-generation Z4. The Z4 sDrive35is (E89, 2011-2016) was the focused performance variant of the second generation. Currently no M-badged Z4. On WhipJury, Z4 submissions are common, particularly M40i and modified examples.

E89 Z4 (2009-2016). Second generation. Hardtop convertible.

Frequently asked questions about BMW Z4

Is Z4 the same as Toyota Supra?
Same platform. The G29 Z4 (2019+) and the A90 Toyota Supra (2019+) are built on the same chassis at the same factory in Austria. Both use BMW B58 inline-six in M40i and Supra trims. Suspension tuning, exterior design, and interior are different between the two cars. They are siblings; choice depends on brand preference and convertible vs coupe.
How much does a Z4 cost?
Used pricing varies by generation. E85 Z4: $5,000-$25,000+. E89 Z4: $15,000-$40,000+. G29 Z4: $35,000-$60,000+. New 2024 G29 Z4 starts around $54,000.
Why is the Z4 not M?
BMW has not produced an M-badged Z4 since the Z4 M Coupe of 2006-2008. The current G29 Z4 has the M40i variant (similar to M340i in 3-Series), which is sport-tuned but not full M division product. The reasons are sales volume and engineering investment rationalization.
Are Z4s reliable?
Generally yes. The BMW B58 inline-six in modern Z4s is durable. The N52 inline-six in earlier Z4s had cooling system concerns at higher mileage. Common issues are typical for BMW: occasional electrical concerns and various age-related items.
Should I get Z4 or Supra?
Different priorities. Z4 is convertible roadster; Supra is fixed-roof coupe. Z4 has more refined daily character; Supra has more aggressive sport tuning. Both share platform. Choice depends on whether you want roof-down driving (Z4) or coupe styling and Toyota brand (Supra).
