Volkswagen doesn't officially say what GLI stands for. Its press materials only note that "'GLI' is a registered trademark of Volkswagen Group of America, Inc."

That's unusual, because VW does define the GTI. "The acronym GTI stands for Gran Turismo Injection," the company says. Some outlets expand GLI as Grand Luxury Injection, but that isn't an official Volkswagen definition. Even Car and Driver's 1984 road test just said, "VW calls the go-fast Jetta the GLI."

A GTI with a trunk

The Jetta GLI first arrived in the US for the 1984 model year, and Volkswagen describes it as having been "dubbed a 'GTI with a trunk.'" It was built on the first-generation Golf and Jetta, in the last year of that platform, according to Hagerty. It shared the GTI's 90-hp fuel-injected 1.8-liter engine and close-ratio five-speed gearbox.

The GLI kept getting quicker. By 1987 it had a 16-valve engine, which Car and Driver tested that year, and VW says the first 16-valve 2.0-liter engine arrived in the 1990 GLI.

The 2027 Jetta GLI

Today's GLI uses the EA888 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, rated at 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. For 2027, Volkswagen dropped the six-speed manual, so the only gearbox is a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch. The 2026 car still offered the manual.

The 2027 GLI comes in one fully loaded Autobahn trim, starting at $33,795.

It's still close kin to the GTI. Both are built on Volkswagen's MQB platform, but the engines have split. The current Golf GTI's EA888 evo4 makes 241 hp, 13 more than the GLI.

If you're weighing the two, you can put the Jetta GLI and the Golf GTI head to head on WhipJury and see which one voters think looks better. Our GLI glossary entry has the short version.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does GLI stand for?
Volkswagen doesn't officially define it. VW's press materials treat GLI as a trademark and don't spell it out. Some outlets expand it as Grand Luxury Injection, but that isn't an official VW definition.
Is the Jetta GLI the same as a Golf GTI?
They're close relatives. Both ride on Volkswagen's MQB platform and use EA888 2.0-liter turbo engines, and VW called the first GLI a "GTI with a trunk." The current engines differ, though: 228 hp in the GLI and 241 hp in the GTI.
Does the 2027 Jetta GLI come with a manual?
No. Volkswagen dropped the six-speed manual for the 2027 model year, so the GLI now comes only with a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic. The 2026 GLI was the last one offered with a manual.
