Yangwang: BYD's Million-Yuan Luxury Brand
EVYangwang is the luxury electric car brand owned by BYD, launched in January 2023 and priced above 1 million yuan (about $140,000) in China, which puts it above BYD's other sub-brands, Denza and Fangchengbao.

The name translates roughly as "looking up" or "admire," and the logo is the Chinese character for lightning written in oracle bone script. Yangwang was the first brand to use BYD's e4 individual wheel drive platform, which gives each wheel its own electric motor.
BYD introduced the brand with a stunt. At the January 2023 launch, founder and CEO Wang Chuanfu drove a U8 SUV onto the stage himself, while a second U8 fitted with Mecanum wheels drove sideways and spun in place like a tank. The U8 went on sale in China that April. It pairs four electric motors with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine for about 1,100 horsepower, and in an emergency such as a flood it can float.
The U9 supercar was previewed alongside the U8 and reached buyers in 2024. The lineup now covers the U7 luxury sedan, the U8 SUV and its long-wheelbase U8L, and the U9. The first Yangwang showroom opened in Shanghai, across from the Oriental Pearl Tower, on September 27, 2023, and BYD sells the brand directly to customers, much as Tesla does in China.
