Yangwang U9: The 1,287-Horsepower Electric Supercar That Can Jump
The Yangwang U9 is a battery electric supercar from BYD's luxury brand, with four motors making 1,287 horsepower and an active suspension that can lift all four wheels off the ground at once.
BYD formally introduced the U9 at Auto Shanghai in April 2023, and it went on sale in China in February 2024 at 1.68 million yuan (about $236,000). Mass production started that August. The design is the work of Wolfgang Egger, who led design at Alfa Romeo, Audi, and Lamborghini before joining BYD in 2017.
Each wheel gets its own 240 kW (322 hp) motor, for 1,287 horsepower in total. BYD quotes 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 2.36 seconds and a quarter mile in 9.78 seconds. The car runs an 800V architecture with DC charging up to 500 kW, which BYD says takes it from 30 to 80 percent in 10 minutes, and it can plug into two chargers at once. The DiSus-X active suspension can make the car jump: it squats, then pushes off, and the whole car hops clear of the ground. BYD has never said what the jump is for. Range is 450 km (about 280 miles) on China's CLTC test cycle.
A standard U9 reached 391.94 km/h (243.54 mph) and lapped the Nordschleife in an uncertified 7:17.9. In August 2025 a Track Edition test car, with four 555 kW motors for 2,977 horsepower, hit 472.41 km/h (293.54 mph), an electric car top speed record. The U9 Xtreme followed in September 2025 and reached 496.22 km/h (308.33 mph) at Germany's ATP Papenburg test track with Marc Basseng driving. That run went in one direction only, so it doesn't meet the two-way rule used for official production car records. Yangwang also announced a 6:59.157 Nordschleife lap, and the Xtreme is limited to 30 cars.
