Toyota
Toyota's full-size SUV. Originally military, now luxury. The 80-series and 100-series are particular collector favorites.
The Toyota Land Cruiser is a full-size SUV produced continuously since 1951. The Land Cruiser was originally developed for military and rugged commercial use, evolving into the modern luxury full-size SUV through ten generations. The model has a global reputation for durability that exceeds nearly any competitor; UN convoys, Australian outback travelers, and African mining operations all rely on Land Cruisers for reliability in extreme conditions. Notable Land Cruiser generations include the 40-series (1960-1984, the iconic Land Cruiser shape), 60-series (1980-1990, the foundation of modern Land Cruisers), 80-series (1990-1997, the breakthrough modern full-size SUV with full-time AWD), 100-series (1998-2007, with available V8), and 200-series (2008-2021, the most refined Land Cruiser through that point). The current 300-series (2021+) continues the lineage but is not sold in North America (for the first time since 1996, due to market shifts toward more car-like SUVs). The Land Cruiser reputation for reliability is real and earned. Used Land Cruisers (especially 80-series and earlier) routinely cross 300,000 to 500,000+ miles when properly maintained. The robust chassis, conservative engine tuning, and over-engineered components have made the platform a favorite for overland travelers, ranchers, and serious off-road enthusiasts. In North America, the previous-generation 200-series Land Cruiser ended production in 2021. Toyota replaced it with the smaller Land Cruiser (essentially the 250-series, sold as the Land Cruiser GX in some markets), which launched in 2024. The new model is more affordable but represents a strategic shift away from the full-size luxury Land Cruiser the brand had been building. On WhipJury, Land Cruiser submissions are particularly active among off-road and overland enthusiasts. 80-series and 100-series builds are most common, often with overland modifications (lift kits, larger tires, recovery gear, roof racks).
The 80-series Land Cruiser (1990-1997) is widely considered the breakthrough modern Land Cruiser. Full-time all-wheel drive, available V8 in JDM markets, sophisticated suspension geometry, and the legendary 1FZ-FE inline-six engine. The 80-series is one of the most highly regarded Land Cruiser generations and is a favorite for overland travel, particularly in modified form.
The Land Cruiser reputation for durability is real. The 70-series (still in production in some markets), 80-series, and 100-series are all routinely run past 300,000 miles. The chassis is over-engineered for the factory power output. Common issues include head gasket service on certain models, suspension wear at higher mileage, and various age-related items. Properly maintained Land Cruisers regularly deliver 30+ years of service.
80-series and 100-series builds are common among overland enthusiasts. Lift kits, larger tires, recovery gear, and roof racks are typical. The community recognizes the Land Cruiser as the gold standard for serious off-road and overland use. Stock examples in clean condition reliably do well in voting.
