The Porsche Boxster is a mid-engine roadster in production since 1996, sister car to the Cayman coupe. The Boxster shares platform with the Cayman; both use the same chassis and powertrain. The Boxster has been Porsche affordable entry-level sports car, providing the Porsche driving experience at lower price points than the 911. Boxster generations include the original (1996-2004), Type 987 (2005-2012), Type 981 (2013-2016), Type 718 Boxster (2016-2024), and current Type 982 (2025+). The 718 Boxster initially used turbocharged flat-four engines (controversial reception). The 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 (2020-2023) brought back naturally aspirated flat-six in a focused sport variant. On WhipJury, Boxster submissions are common across generations. The 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 and the older 981 Boxster Spyder are particularly desirable.

Porsche CFO Jochen Breckner confirmed on the October 27 earnings call that Audi's electric sports car, previewed by the Concept C, will use the platform built for the electric 718 Boxster and Cayman. Audi will pay Porsche for it in 2027.
Porsche says it is developing a mid-engined super sports car platform for a model line above the 911, previewed by the Mission S concept on October 15. The same plan confirms the next 718 Boxster and Cayman will be electric only.
