What is Adaptive Suspension?
Adaptive suspension uses electronically controlled dampers that adjust their stiffness in real time, letting a car shift between a comfortable ride and firmer, more responsive handling.
Adaptive suspension refers to a suspension system whose damping characteristics can be adjusted electronically, either automatically in response to road conditions and driving inputs or manually by the driver selecting a drive mode. Unlike a conventional passive suspension, where each shock absorber has a fixed damping rate set at the factory, adaptive systems use sensors and fast-acting actuators or specialized fluids to change how firmly the dampers resist wheel movement, often making adjustments many times per second in response to inputs such as steering angle, throttle position, body movement, and road surface irregularities.
Several distinct technologies fall under the adaptive suspension umbrella. Electronically controlled dampers use a solenoid or valve to vary the flow of hydraulic fluid within a conventional shock absorber. Magnetorheological suspension, marketed by General Motors as MagneRide and used across brands including Cadillac, Chevrolet, Ferrari, and Audi, uses a fluid filled with iron particles that changes viscosity almost instantly when exposed to a magnetic field controlled by the car's computer, allowing extremely fast damping adjustments without mechanical valves. Air suspension systems, which replace conventional coil springs with adjustable air-filled bellows, are often paired with adaptive damping to additionally vary ride height and spring rate.
The practical benefit of adaptive suspension is letting one car span a wider range of behavior than a fixed suspension setup could achieve: a softer setting improves ride comfort over broken pavement and reduces impact harshness, while a firmer setting reduces body roll and improves steering response for spirited driving or track use. Most adaptive suspension systems are tied to selectable drive modes, commonly labeled something like Comfort, Sport, and Track, letting the driver choose the suspension's behavior to match road conditions or driving intent rather than being locked into a single compromise setup.
