Volkswagen Phaeton: The Ambitious Luxury Flagship
The Phaeton was Volkswagen's audacious full-size luxury sedan, a technical tour de force that aimed to rival the world's best.
Launched in 2002, the Phaeton was Volkswagen's bold attempt to build a world-class luxury sedan under a mainstream badge. Engineered to extraordinary standards, it shared much with the Bentley Continental and offered powerful engines up to a W12, advanced air suspension, and a hand-finished, opulent interior.
Built in a special glass-walled factory in Dresden, the Phaeton was a genuinely excellent luxury car, but the Volkswagen badge made it a hard sell against established prestige brands at its high price. It sold poorly in many markets, especially the US.
The Phaeton was discontinued in 2016, remembered as a fascinating, over-engineered flagship that proved Volkswagen's capability even as it struggled commercially.
