Mercedes-Benz G-Class

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class (G-Wagen, Geländewagen) is an off-road luxury SUV in continuous production since 1979. The G-Class was originally developed for military and government use, with a body-on-frame chassis, three locking differentials, and serious off-road capability. The civilian G-Wagen has become one of the most distinctive luxury SUVs globally. The G-Class went through multiple generations: W460 (1979-1992, original military and civilian), W463 (1990-2018, the iconic civilian G-Wagen), W463A (2018+, the current generation with completely new chassis but retained boxy design). The G63 AMG variant is the modern halo. The G63 uses the M177 twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 making 577 horsepower (later increased to 585+ horsepower in current trim). The G63 retains the G-Class off-road capability while adding sport sedan performance. The G63 has become a status symbol and is one of the highest-priced production SUVs ever made. The W463 (1990-2018) had nearly 30 years of production with minimal changes to the body design. This unusually long production run made the W463 G-Class instantly recognizable. The W463A (2018+) is mechanically a completely new vehicle but maintains the visual signature.
