What is Brake Fade?

Brake fade is a temporary loss of stopping power caused by overheated brake pads, rotors, or fluid, common during track days and long mountain descents.

Brake fade is a reduction in braking performance that occurs when a car's brake system generates more heat than it can dissipate, most often during sustained or repeated hard braking such as a track session or a long downhill descent. There are two main mechanisms behind it: pad fade, where the friction material itself overheats and its coefficient of friction drops, requiring more pedal pressure to achieve the same stopping force; and fluid fade, also called vapor lock, where the brake fluid absorbs enough heat to boil, introducing compressible gas bubbles into the hydraulic lines that make the pedal feel soft or spongy and reduce the force actually transmitted to the calipers.

Brake fade typically announces itself gradually, with the pedal requiring progressively more travel or pressure to achieve the same stopping force, though in severe cases it can escalate quickly into a near-total loss of braking effectiveness. It is a well-known risk on racetracks, where repeated hard braking zones lap after lap heat the system faster than street driving, and on long mountain grades, where sustained braking to control downhill speed generates continuous heat without the cooling airflow benefit of intermittent braking.

Preventing brake fade generally comes down to managing heat: using engine braking or lower gears to reduce reliance on the brakes during long descents, upgrading to high-temperature brake pads and fluid with a higher boiling point for track use, improving airflow to the brakes with ducting or larger rotors, and allowing brakes to cool between hard sessions. Track-focused vehicles and many performance cars come from the factory with larger brakes, dedicated cooling ducts, and high-temperature fluid specifically to raise the threshold at which fade begins.
