What is Brake Bias?
Brake bias is the front-to-rear split of braking force in a car, tuned so the front brakes do more of the work because weight shifts forward under braking.
Brake bias refers to how braking force is divided between the front and rear axles. Almost every road car is biased toward the front brakes doing more of the stopping work, because braking shifts the car's weight forward, loading the front tires more heavily and unloading the rear. Front tires carrying more weight can generate more grip and therefore handle more braking force before locking up, so a front-biased setup lets a car brake harder overall before either end runs out of traction.
Getting the balance wrong causes different problems depending on which direction it is off. If bias is too far toward the rear, the rear tires can lock up before the fronts, which is dangerous because a car with locked rear tires loses lateral stability and can spin, especially mid-corner. If bias is too far toward the front, the front tires lock up early, which causes understeer and increases stopping distance because the rear tires are not contributing their fair share of braking force. Manufacturers tune this balance using proportioning valves that limit rear brake pressure, and modern cars manage it further through ABS, which independently pulses each wheel to prevent lockup regardless of the base mechanical bias.
In racing, brake bias is often adjustable on the fly through a balance bar connected to twin master cylinders, letting a driver shift the front-rear split to match changing conditions such as a lighter fuel load, a wet track, or brake fade on one axle. Race engineers will also adjust bias per corner type or per lap as tire grip and brake temperatures change. Even with ABS active, an experienced driver adjusts bias because ABS is a safety net that intervenes after lockup starts, while good bias tuning keeps braking balanced and efficient before ABS ever needs to step in.
