Rivian R2: The Smaller, Affordable Electric SUV
The R2 is Rivian's midsize electric SUV, bringing the brand's adventurous capability to a more affordable price point, and it has now reached its first customers as public deliveries begin.
Unveiled in 2024 and entering customer hands in 2026, the R2 is a pivotal model for Rivian: a midsize SUV positioned below the larger R1S to reach a broader, more price-conscious audience. It keeps Rivian's rugged, adventure-focused ethos in a more compact and attainable package, with a starting price set far below the R1.
The R2 offers strong electric range, multiple motor configurations including single-, dual- and tri-motor all-wheel drive, and the off-road and outdoor-oriented features that defined the brand. A simpler design and a new manufacturing approach are aimed at lowering cost and scaling production at Rivian's Illinois plant.
As Rivian's bid for the mainstream premium EV market, the R2 is central to the company's growth strategy. With first public deliveries now beginning, it aims to do for Rivian what higher-volume models did for other electric brands.
