The Cherokee is one of Jeep's most important nameplates, spanning the segment-defining XJ of the 1980s to modern crossovers.
The Cherokee name became legendary with the XJ generation (1984 to 2001), a compact, unibody SUV that helped create the modern SUV market. Rugged, boxy, and capable, the XJ Cherokee earned a devoted following for its off-road ability and durability.
After the XJ, the Cherokee name went on hiatus in the US (replaced by the Liberty) before returning in 2014 as a more car-like compact crossover with available genuine off-road capability in Trailhawk form.
Across its generations the Cherokee has balanced everyday usability with Jeep's signature capability, remaining a cornerstone of the brand's lineup.
