What is WEC?
The WEC is the FIA World Endurance Championship, a global sports car series that includes the 24 Hours of Le Mans and top-tier Hypercar competition.
The WEC, or FIA World Endurance Championship, is a global sports car racing series sanctioned by the FIA, running events at circuits around the world. Established in 2012, it grew out of earlier world sports car championship efforts and positioned endurance racing, contested over hours rather than a fixed number of laps, as its central format.
The most prominent event on the WEC calendar is the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a race with roots dating back to 1923 that has become one of the most prestigious events in motorsport, often described alongside the Indianapolis 500 and Monaco Grand Prix as part of the unofficial "Triple Crown" of racing. While Le Mans predates the WEC and is organized by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest, it is included as a round of the championship each season.
The WEC's top class in recent seasons is the Hypercar category, which brought manufacturers back into prototype racing under regulations designed to control costs while allowing distinctive, road-relevant styling. Alongside Hypercar, the series runs GT classes for production-based cars, preserving the multi-class endurance format that lets a range of manufacturers and teams compete within the same events.
