What is Rev Limiter?
A rev limiter is an electronic or mechanical control that stops an engine from spinning past a set RPM, protecting it from damage once it reaches its redline.
A rev limiter is a safeguard built into an engine's control system that prevents the crankshaft from spinning faster than a predetermined maximum RPM. Modern engines almost universally use electronic rev limiters managed by the engine control unit, which monitors RPM continuously and intervenes once the limit is reached, while older or more basic setups sometimes used simpler mechanical or ignition-based limiting circuits. The limit itself is closely tied to the engine's redline, the maximum safe operating RPM defined by the engine's mechanical design, though the rev limiter is typically set slightly above redline to provide a hard stop just past where damage risk becomes significant.
Rev limiters intervene using one or more methods: fuel cut, where the engine control unit stops delivering fuel to some or all cylinders once the limit is reached; ignition cut, where spark is interrupted instead of or in addition to fuel; or, on older or more crude systems, a governor that mechanically restricts throttle or fuel delivery. Fuel and ignition cut limiters typically produce the sharp, stuttering sensation drivers feel when an engine bounces off its rev limiter, since the engine is rapidly gaining and losing power as the limiter cycles on and off just below the cutoff.
Beyond the factory setting, rev limiters are a common target of aftermarket tuning, since raising the limit alongside supporting hardware and software changes can unlock extra power at the top of an engine's rev range, particularly on engines whose mechanical components can safely handle higher RPM than the factory calibration allows. Conversely, launch control systems intentionally use a separate, lower rev limiter to hold the engine at an optimal launch RPM before a standing start, distinct from the standard high-RPM protective limiter.
