What is Nismo?

Nissan in-house performance and motorsport division. Founded 1984. Produces high-performance Nissan variants and racing parts for Z, GT-R, Skyline, and other models.

Nismo (Nissan Motorsports International, formerly Nismo Limited) is Nissan in-house performance and motorsport division, founded in 1984 through the consolidation of Nissan racing departments. Nismo produces high-performance variants of production Nissan models, racing parts, and competes in various motorsport series globally including Super GT (Japan), 24 Hours of Le Mans (in past years), and various international racing programs.

The Nismo lineup includes both factory-modified production cars and aftermarket parts. The Nissan GT-R Nismo (sold across multiple R35 model years from 2014+) is the highest-performance R35 variant, with chassis stiffening, suspension upgrades, more aggressive tune, and aerodynamic enhancements. Other notable Nismo products include the Nismo Z (350Z, 370Z, modern Z), Nismo Juke, and various Nismo-branded aftermarket parts for older Nissan models including the Skyline GT-R, Silvia, and Z cars.

Nismo has been particularly active in modifying older JDM cars. The Nissan Skyline GT-R R32, R33, and R34 with Nismo upgrades (suspension, body kits, exhaust) are highly regarded. Nismo crate engines (S15 Silvia SR20DET and Skyline RB26DETT) are sold for engine swaps and rebuilds. The brand commands respect in the global Nissan enthusiast community comparable to BMW M or Mercedes-AMG.

Is the Nismo GT-R faster than a regular GT-R?
Yes, significantly. The Nismo GT-R has a more aggressive tune (around 600+ horsepower vs 565 for standard GT-R), stiffer suspension, more aerodynamic downforce, and chassis stiffening. Lap times are noticeably faster on track. The street performance is similar, though refined; the major gains are in track-focused performance.
Is Nismo only for Nissan cars?
Yes, exclusively. Nismo is Nissan internal performance division and only modifies Nissan products. The Nismo brand and parts are not available for Toyota, Honda, or other manufacturer vehicles. Different Japanese manufacturers have their own equivalent in-house performance divisions (Toyota TRD/GR, Honda Mugen connection, Mazda MS, Subaru STI).
What is the Nismo Z?
The current Nismo Z (2024+) is the high-performance variant of the Nissan Z (the seventh-generation Z car launched in 2023). The Nismo Z has a more aggressive tune (around 420 horsepower vs 400 standard), stiffer suspension, more aero, and exterior styling differences. Nissan continues the Nismo Z lineage from 350Z and 370Z eras.
Are old Nismo parts still available?
Some are. Nismo continues to produce parts for older JDM cars (R32, R33, R34 GT-R; S13, S14, S15 Silvia; older Z cars). Limited production runs of legacy parts are sometimes announced. The Nismo Heritage Parts Project specifically supports parts availability for older models.
Is the Skyline GT-R Nismo Z-Tune real?
Yes, but extremely rare. The Skyline GT-R Nismo Z-Tune (built 2003-2005, only 19 cars) was a limited-edition refurbished R34 GT-R with an upgraded RB26DETT (around 500 horsepower), suspension reworked by Nismo, and racing-derived chassis modifications. Z-Tunes now sell for over $1.5 million at auction.

Every R35 GT-R engine was assembled by a single master builder in a clean room, and signed with a name plaque. The VR38DETT is a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 that went from 480 horsepower to about 600, and it's most of why the GT-R earned the Godzilla name.
