A concours d'elegance, French for competition of elegance, is a formal judged automotive event where entered vehicles are scored by expert judges against detailed criteria rather than raced or timed against each other. Judging typically weighs factors including originality of parts and finishes, mechanical and cosmetic condition, historical accuracy compared to how the car left the factory or was originally built, and, for restored cars, the quality and correctness of the restoration work. The format originated in early 20th century Europe as a showcase for elegant coachwork and fine automobiles, and it has evolved into the automotive world's most prestigious venue for recognizing exceptional preservation and restoration.
The Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, held annually in California since 1950, is widely regarded as the most prestigious event of its kind, drawing rare and historically significant cars from around the world, with a Best of Show award considered one of the highest honors a classic car and its owner can receive. Other major concours events include the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance in Florida, the Villa d'Este event in Italy, and numerous regional and marque-specific concours held throughout the year, each with its own judging traditions and areas of specialty.
Entry into a top-tier concours is itself selective, with organizers often inviting specific cars based on rarity, provenance, and historical significance rather than accepting open registration, and cars are frequently restored to concours standard specifically with the goal of competing at a marquee event. Because concours judging rewards originality and factory-correct detail so heavily, cars that have been modified from their original specification, even tastefully, generally cannot compete successfully at the highest level, distinguishing concours culture from other collector car communities such as restomod and hot rod builders that prize personalization over strict originality.
